2018 Year of the Dog

The Chinese New Year is celebrated this year on February 16, 2018 which marks the new moon day of the first Chinese lunar month. This year it the year of the Earth Dog and officially begins on the start of the first day of Spring , which is February 4. The commcencment of Spring is based on the sun’s position at the 315th degree on the tropical zodiac.

The dog is the 11th of the 12 Chinese zodiac signs and 2018 marks the year 4,715 in the Chinese calendar. The year of the earth dog, also known as the brown or yellow dog, has all five elements associated with a dog year, and is repeating over a 60 year cycle:

  • The earth dog years are 1958 and 2018

  • The metal dog years are 1910 and 1970

  • The water dog years are 1922 and 1982

  • The wood dog years are 1934 and 1994

  • The fire dog years are 1946 and 2006

The dog is a yang sign, its fixed element is metal, its ascribed season is autumn, and the dog time of day is between 7–9 pm. People born in this two hour segment have the dog as their ascendent sign and therefore share dog qualities or have a great affinity for people born in the year of the dog.

According to the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) internal organ clock theory, 7–9 pm is the pericardium hand-jeuyin time of day.

Dog people are known to be loyal, wary, honest, and personable. The dog is a protector and is helpful in times of need, but may express a momentary rash of anger, especially if they feel they have been wronged, but they do not hold grudges when justice or remediation is addressed.

Dog people tend to be friendly and egalitarian, although capricious at times. Dogs see through people’s bad intentions and guard against those that stand in the way of harmony.

These and other Traditional Chinese practices all form part of TCM, each adding a little to the history and methodology of Acupuncture and Herbs.
