I met Eca when I was 38 weeks pregnant and feeling quite apprehensive about what labour and birth would involve. I had been undergoing acupuncture treatments throughout my pregnancy, but in Oxford, and had been looking for an acupuncturist in my home city of London when my hypnobirthing instructor recommended Eca. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 28 weeks and told I would have to be induced if the pregnancy lasted more than 40 weeks – something that had added to my anxiety about labour because I wanted the birth to be as natural as possible rather than medical.
From the very first conversation I had with Eca, I was impressed by her attention to detail. She asked me to provide an in-depth history about myself before the appointment, and during our first meeting she devoted an entire hour to finding out more about my state of mind and body type before she began the treatment. Her advice leading up to the day my waters broke was invaluable.
Eca has such a reassuring presence that I felt like she was not just my acupuncturist but my therapist too, helping me deal with all my anxieties about whether I would be able to go into labour naturally, which I did eventually. But I had to use pain relief and drugs to augment labour as my daughter was positioned back-to-back, resulting in a 36-hour-long labour and being wheeled into the operation theatre for a vacuum-assisted delivery.
Three days after my daughter was born, Eca came over to give me a treatment at home. She brought over a lovely gift for my daughter, some homemade herbal cookies and an ointment to help me recover from what had been a long and traumatic labour and birth. Eca went beyond the call of duty to check up on me and make sure I was doing OK in those first few weeks when almost every new mum is in a state of shock from labour, birth and being confronted with the immense – and seemingly impossible, not to mention life-changing – responsibility of caring for a fragile little baby. I had a few more treatments at home and could not be more grateful that Eca was willing to travel with her kit to support a new mum in every possible way. And I felt so much lighter, happier and stronger each time.
Eca’s concern was touching and she was able to more than adequately address the issues bothering me during every appointment – whether it was my milk supply, lower back pain from multiple epidural top-ups and feeling stressed out in general. The fact that I would often fall asleep during the session is testament to how relaxed I felt in her presence. Thanks Eca!
