Prostate enlargement may be one the most common health problem in men older than 60 years of age. A man's prostate gland usually starts to enlarge after he reaches 40 years of age. As the prostate grows larger, it may press on the urethra. This narrowing of the urethra can cause trouble with urination.
Many men with an enlarged prostate have no symptoms. If symptoms are present, they commonly include a weak stream of urine, difficulty starting urination, dribbling of urine especially after urinating, a sense of not fully emptying the bladder, leaking of urine, blood in urine, more frequent urination and a strong and sudden desire to urinate especially at night.
In some cases, blockage may cause repeated urinary tract infection and gradually result in bladder or kidney damage. It may also cause a sudden inability to urinate - a medical emergency.
A variety of factors may be involved in causing prostate enlargement including androgen (male hormones), estrogen, growth factors and other cell signalling pathway. For men who eat late at night and drink a lot of beers before going to bed are more likely to become overweight with large belly and can cause prostate enlargement.
Drinking too much water before bed can also cause bladder wall to thicken and affect prostate health. For prevention, it is best to restrict water intake two hours before bedtime.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) including acupuncture, Chinese herbology and qi gong may offer great promise as treatment for common men's health conditions related to the prostate including symptoms related to chronic prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia and as supportive care for prostate cancer.
In adult males, its main function is to produce prostatic fluid that contributes to the volume of semen. In males under the age of 50, the most common condition affecting the prostate is prostatitis, which means "inflammation of the prostate”. We often suggest that men try taking this simple tea as a first steps towards healing their prostrate.
Paeony Bark (mu dan pi)
Grey atractylodes (cang zhu)
Winter melon seeds/ wax gourd seeds
Job's Tears (yi yi ren)
Indian Bread (fu ling)
1. Rinse herbs, put in a pot with 2 cups of water. Bring to boil and lower heat to medium and cook for 45 minutes to one cup of water left.
2. Drink tea.
